Homefront Wedding Poster Woodford Players

HOMEFRONT WEDDING devised and directed by Barbara Harris

August 2025 will be 80 years since VJ Day and the end of WWII
WOODFORD PLAYERS is commemorating the event with the above show

on the 19th and 20th September 2025

Life could be hard during the Second World War, but the songs, radio programmes, films and comedy of the era kept up the spirits of those on the home front.
“Homefront Wedding” at Woodford Players recreates the era for your enjoyment. You will watch a famous scene from a film, be in the audience at a radio play and sing-a-long to songs of the era. The show concludes with an invitation to a wedding.

This show is being performed by members of Woodford Players but WE NEED FULL AUDIENCES to help us out with the singing. Perhaps you’d like to dress up in your favourite 1940’s look from Air Raid Wardens to Nurses to the Military or maybe your favourite dance dress and shoes to go to the local hop.

The members of Woodford Players are really looking forward to seeing YOU in the audience. Please make a note in your diaries NOW so you don’t forget the dates. FRIDAY AND SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 19th and 20th 2025 and to round off a memorable weekend we will be holding, in conjunction with the RBL, a Victory Tea Party on the Sunday.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 21st 2025

VICTORY AFTERNOON TEA PARTY AT THE WOODFORD CENTRE

Details to follow soon.

Wartime Weddings

  • During World War II, marriage rates soared by 20%.
  • Rationing was so tight, wartime wedding cakes were sometimes made from cardboard and for display only.
  • Fabrics were rationed, too, so wedding dresses tended to be much simpler than in previous decades- of the bride would wear her best dress and hat.
  • Ration coupons would often be pooled so there could be food and drink at the reception.
