Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me ~ 3rd, 4th and 5th April 2014
Have you heard the one about the Englishman, the Irishman and the American? It may sound funny but this comic combination is no joke when they are slowly going mad in a bare, Beirut cell. Strangely, Frank McGuiness’ play about inhumanity could almost be listed as a comedy since there are so many funny lines in this award-winning drama.
The three men, a brash, athletic American, a cynical Irish journalist and a “buttoned up, stand-offish” English lecturer are taken hostage by unseen captors in the Middle East. Their very different cultural backgrounds add a whole other dimension to their struggle to simply stay alive and sane. The three’s vivid imaginations are the only defence they have against their daily battle with the despair about the grim reality of their seemingly endless incarceration, but how those imaginations shine through. You could be forgiven for thinking that this play would be filled with doom and gloom but Frank McGuiness has crafted an utterly compelling, humour riven, piece of drama which ebbs and flows with almost heart stopping moments of hilarity, tension, friendship and fantasy and as such is an absolute “must see”.

Just back in from watching Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me – excellent, well done the boys, Sue and everyone involved. An emotional roller coaster performed with passion. DW
“Some friends and I came to see Someone Who’ll Watch Ove Me last night. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. One couple live in Mottram and had never heard of or been to see any of Woodford Players shows, in fact, they always go into Manchester for theatre. They will be back ! They were overwhelmed by the very high standard of production and the acting and were quite moved by the experience. Well done to all cast and crew. Looking forward to “Celebration”. NB
We loved the play – really powerful stuff and so well done. M & G L

Beautiful play, acted and directed with sympathy, passion and professionalism. Well done to all involved. CS (from our Facebook page)
I thought I should write to congratulate the Woodford Players on such a magnificent performance on Saturday night. The play is a very complex one, covering, as it does, the whole spectrum of human emotion, As such, I imagine, it is very difficult to translate into dramatic form but Woodford Players managed to do this superbly well. Great credit is due to the director, the cast and all the backstage team. ‘There wasn’t a dry eye in the place’ is a bit of a theatrical cliché but I could see one or two grown men sniffling a little as they left the hall on Saturday! I very much look forward to your next production. MC

I went to see Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me somewhat reluctantly but Oh Boy am I glad I did. A tough, difficult and challenging subject but one which was beautifully portrayed by three very talented actors. A superb evening’s entertainment. Well done Woodford Players. BL
Congratulations to all concerned with your latest production. Another wonderful performance by all – a difficult and challenging play but done with sensitivity and at times great humour. Those who decided not to come missed a superb play! ML
